Assessing indigenous human rights in Australia
Tue, 18 August 2009
The Australian Human Rights Commission has made a submission on behalf of the Indigenous Peoples Organisation (IPO) Network to Professor S. James Anaya, UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Indigenous Peoples, ahead of his upcoming visit.
The brief compiled by the IPO Network also includes information supplied by the National Indigenous Youth Movement of Australia.
Anaya is undertaking a Mission to Australia from 17-28 August during which he will investigate and report on the major challenges faced by Indigenous peoples of Australia in the enjoyment of their human rights, with a view toward contributing to steps to address those problems, as well as to identify good practices.
On completion of the mission the Special Rapporteur produces a Country Report which is presented to UN Human Rights Council.
The report includes several recommendations that the IPO Network hope will inform Anaya’s report.
