The Macquarie Group Foundation, Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia, and the UK MS Society have awarded their first joint Fellowship to distinguished neuroscientist Dr Julie Morahan, who will receive £50,000 per year for a three-year post doctoral study into the genetic predisposition of MS at Oxford University.
Dr Morahan has previously conducted research into Motor Neurone Disease (MND) – another debilitating neurological condition – and says that it is the genuine hope for a cure that has attracted her to this new area of research. “A lot is known about the disease and it is very well-defined in a research sense. We are close to getting definite answers and close to an effective treatment option.”
Commenting on the new award, MS Research Australia Executive Director Jenny Wright said “As a young scientist in the area of neuroscience, I am delighted that [Dr Morahan] is using her scientific prowess now to help people with MS.”
Head of the Macquarie Group Foundation Julie White said “We wish Dr Morahan every success in her pioneering scientific work in a disease category where there is so much hope.”
